ESPN ups media deal with professional lacrosse, gains an equity stake in the league

 

ESPN has extended its media rights agreement with the Premier Lacrosse League till 2030.

Including all PLL regular-season games with All-Star, playoff and championship games, the five-year agreement would be kicking in with 2026 season.

ESPN, owned by Disney, confirmed it would get minority stake in the league.

The 2026 season would kick in five-year deal that includes PLL regular-season games with All-Star, playoff and championship games. The deal prompts as pro lacrosse perceived advantages across broadcaster, partnerships and attendance. Its addition to the 2028 Olympic Games is also expected.

The deal lays out that ESPN will get a minority stake in the league. The investment will seek a 3% stake for ESPN, a person familiar with the terms said on anonymity’s conditions to reveal the information.

ESPN specialized in understanding of sports fans predicting expertly audience and growth, PLL co-founder and president Paul Rabit told CNBC. It’s confirming that their center attention is to put the money in what we’re creating, then as a partner, additionally they’d be putting forward expansion of coverage. Sport sees media deal with ESPN essential for its growth, Rabil said, as the network is sinking money into for almost three decades.

The long-lasting partnership potentially provided benefits to ESPN. ABC sees 9% surge in viewership year over year for PLL’s championship game in the time of 2024 season. ESPN has historically aired the league’s most-viewed All-Star game also.

The PLL’s all metrics growth is also elevating. Since 2019, paid tickets are surging 34%, attendance is ticking 13%, ticket revenue is increasing 149%, and sponsor dollars are bolstering more than 100%, Rabil said.

The league is running its seventh season. The likes of Joe Tsai, the Chernin Group, Arctos, the Kraft Group and CAA are financially sponsoring the league.

Last year, PLL put out an announcement to kick off a Women’s Lacrosse League led it to its inaugural season currently.
